Environmental Impact Statement Process
As part of the approval process for the proposed expansion of the Olympic Dam mine, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is at an advanced stage of preparation.
- The EIS will be based on the outcomes of BHP Billiton’s selection study which will determine project configuration, infrastructure requirements, final estimated costs and long term sustainability.
- Once the EIS process is completed, including public consultation, the South Australian and Federal governments will consider the EIS documentation.
- The schedule for the expanded mine will depend on government and BHP Billiton board approvals.
An EIS is a detailed description and analysis of the potential impacts of a proposed activity on the following aspects: Social, Environmental, Cultural and Economic.
An EIS will establish whether the potential impacts can be managed, and if so, what strategies and safeguards need to be adopted to ensure this management occurs in the short, medium and long term.
Depending on the scope and nature of the EIS, the documentation is prepared by recognised experts from a wide variety of disciplines including: Science, Economics, Statistics, Environment, Cultural studies, Engineering and Social sciences.
EIS Process Consultation
During the selection of the proposed mine expansion, BHP Billiton has undertaken an extensive consultation process. Consultation has involved:
- More than 3,000 members of the public
- 60 industry groups
- 55 non-government organisations
- 50 government departments and service providers
Consultation has been supported by the following initiatives:
- Developing a database of interested stakeholders
- Distributing information sheets
- Media advertisements in South Australia
- Community feedback forums
- Obtaining feedback from telephone surveys of South Australian residents

Objectives of the consultation process have been to:
- Encourage a high level of community participation and feedback.
- Identify the key community issues for consideration.
- Inform BHP Billiton to assist its own decision-making process.

Public consultation will continue throughout the EIS process.
