BHP Billiton is undertaking a two year prefeasibility study into the expansion of Olympic Dam in South Australia, which includes the examination of a broad range of alternatives. It is likely to see the advent of open pit operations in addition to the existing underground mine, and will become one of the largest of its type in the world. An Environmental Impact Statement is being prepared for the Australian and South Australian Governments.
